The boredom of a typical Sunday is relieved when the circus troupe, comes to town. The politically charged performance given by the “Arnoldo and Mellissa Boticellissa” performers turns out to be the troupe’s last show.
Set in a small village of Raciaz in central Poland, Niedziela is a film about a certain circus troupe’s visit to town. For the small crowd of spectators that gathers, the arrival of the “Arnoldo and Mellissa Boticellissa” performers alleviates the boredom of a typical Sunday afternoon.
It is a politically charged performance. An old actress reads a poem, “In the old Polish custom, may the banner of freedom flutter, and may the white eagle spread its’ wings over the free Polish land.” Another performer, dressed in the national colors, symbolically acts out Poland’s liberation from oppression. In the background a Polish hymn is heard, a traditional ballad banned by the Communist government.
Incidentally, this was the troupe’s last public performance. The documentary was made in 1979, and was produced in association with the Polish Film School in Lodz.
